The most beautiful Hikes in Madeira

If you are in Madeira and you enjoy hiking this is your heaven. Madeira has some of the world’s most beautiful hiking trails with views to die for. In the 2 weeks I spent there, we managed to go on various hikes.

Ponta de Sao Lourenco

QUICK FACTS:

Total distance 8 km (there and back)
Difficulty: Moderate
Duration: 2.5 hours
Max Altitude: 110 m

This is one of the hikes with low vegetation and a lack of trees so it can get very tiring when going on this hike on a hot day so I suggest you take plenty of water. The views on this hike are absolutely worth it when you get to the top.

Pico de Arieiro to Pico Ruivo

Total distance: 12 km
Difficulty: Difficult
Duration: 8 hours
Max Altitude: 1861 m (highest point in Madeira)

This is a very challenging hike if you don’t hike much. However, I come with good news, if you would still like to reach Pico Ruivo with its excellent views there is another shorter route you can take. You can drive up to Achada de Teixeira and from there the route is shorter and safer as well.

Total distance: 3 km
Difficulty: Moderate
Duration: 2.5 hours – 3 hours
Max Altitude: 1861 m (highest point in Madeira)

When you do this route for sunrise or sunset it can be so beautiful. We started hiking at 5 am in the dark, so take torches. Wait at the top for sunrise and choose a day with predicted clear skies. It was one of the best hikes I have ever been done and the most beautiful sunrise I have ever witnessed to this day.

Levada do Caldeirao Verde

Total distance: 12 km (there and back)
Difficulty: Moderate
Duration: 5.5 hours
Max Altitude: 980 m

A chill, green foresty walk. I really enjoyed this walk before the sun was not directly hitting me and it was refreshing to be in the woods. Take a torch to get through the caves and be aware there are many very narrow paths you have to walk on. Some of which are one way systems so you would have to give way to people approaching as there is only one path for both directions of travel.

Although there are safety railings in place for all of these hikes, there are parts where there aren’t. Stay cautious and travel safe! These hikes were totally worth it and I would definitely recommend every single one of them.
